As
el verano hits, the sun and heat on the Spanish plateau set in and we all need
un poquito of an escape...
Our
nuevo compañero de piso Alex, Markel and I ventured to Segovia for an afternoon of Roman ruins and delicious Spanish delights. After a long night of eating and dancing with my co-workers the previous evening, the
viaje to higher elevation was much needed. We saw the Roman aqueducts, the enchanting
alcázar that inspired Disney's castle, and the
plaza mayor that a large ornate cathedral overlooks. To eat the afternoon, we ate
huevos revueltos with chorizo and potatoes... such a classic, greasy Spanish dish that I allow myself every now and again!

The following morning, a small
grupo of us went north again to Cercedilla to take a dip in the
piscinas naturales. Although they didn't look at all natural (in fact, looked much more like actually pools than springs that I was expecting), the water was definitely fresh and without chemicals. After getting a bit lost upon arrival, we met with friends and had a picnic on site. I love Spanish picnics... there was
pollo empanado (breaded chicken),
tortilla española, some Lambrusco (sparkling rosé wine), a quiche lorraine (ham and cheese), and our all-American sub-sandwiches with avocado and turkey. Mmmmm, what a meal
perfecto before resting in and alongside the pool....
